Fuel Burn Efficiency in US Airlines

When comparing fuel burn efficiency across large US airline operators, we used BTS data to compare gallons consumed per available ton mile (ATM) for each aircraft type in operation in Q2, 2020.

The A220-100 as well as A220-300 stood out at most efficient not only in their respective gauge categories but they also produce better per unit fuel burn than some of the larger aircraft.

Given the variability in fuel burn by airline operator within the same fleet type, there exists an opportunity to realized better fuel efficiency and lower the carbon footprint. We acknowledge that some of the difference can be explained by difference in operating environment (busier airspace etc.) and stage length but a deeper look by airlines is warranted.
